AP Test Preparation

Need to prepare for an AP European history test, or even the AP Exam? Don't worry, there's a simple three step method for comprehensive test preparation. Just remember to start reviewing early enough that you have time to learn everything! (If you're short on time, see the last paragraph for study resources that can speed your preparation).

So, what are the three ways to practice you're AP European history facts? First, you need a basic grasp of the concepts covered. If you're studying a specific time period, identify the most important broad themes of the time. Make a list of major movements, like the Industrial Revolution, or Baroque art.

First, you'll need to go over all of the main themes. Make sure you understand the chronological order of events. Major topics include 'The Industrial Revolution' or 'The 30 Years War.' This basic European history review ensures that you will at least understand questions on the test, and will give you a framework for further detail.

Next, get a little more in depth. Depending on the teacher, you might also have to learn some dates (which I hate, sorry if you have to do this). Memorize the important facts like people's names, critical cities and broad policy decisions. For example: What was the significance of the Enclosure Acts in England? Memorizing super nitty-gritty details isn't the best use of your time, although it may come in handy for very in-depth questions or essays.

Before you begin writing, take the time to make a quick outline of your points. Go for a three body paragraph essay, possibly with an intro and conclusion if you have time left over. Furthermore, you should have at least three strong points in each of your essays, although it's better if you have four or five. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that proves part of your thesis, and should end with a transition sentence. Make sure your essay is very focused; don't stray from the topic or go on long tangents - you only have a little time to write and need every minute of it.

Second, it's often wise to address issues chronologically. If an essay question asks for a description or a movement or period, start from the beginning and make your observations as you progress. For some questions however, you may want to take a topical approach, addressing each aspect of the essay question, say socially, economically and politically in your three body paragraphs. You'll just have to decide how to organize your essay based on the question and the situation.

Don't like class discussions? You're in luck, because the most important skill for success is actually test preparation. You'll need to quickly review and learn all the topics that were covered in class, preparing for multiple choice questions, essays, or even short answer.
